-Patrick Whitefield
・Care for Earth
・Sharing of the Resources
Workshop
Introduction to Permaculture
A two day workshop taught by Dion Workman and Takuya Sasa (presented in English and Japanese)
Date:24th and 25th of March
Place:Nerima-ku, Tokyo

The central aim of permaculture is to reduce our ecological impact. Or, more precisely, its to turn our negative ecological impact into a positive one.
- Patrick Whitefield
Permaculture is an ethically based design system that is about whole lifestyles. The ethics; Care for the Earth, Care for People, and Sharing of the Resources, form the foundation from which we design regenerative systems to realize health, sustainability and resiliency in our human communities and the wider communities of life of which we are a part.
In this workshop participants will be given the basic tools to begin applying permaculture design in their everyday lives.
Topics covered in this workshop will include:
・Principles of permaculture
・Traditional and contemporary Japanese practices that harmonize with the permaculture principles
・Understanding natural ecosystems as models for human habitats / Creation of human habitats with minimal disturbance of natural ecosystems
・Fundamental steps in the permaculture design process
・Urban application of permaculture design
・Practicing designing
・Hands-on small scale food production (growing micro greens and apartment compost in system)
Principles of permaculture
Traditional and contemporary Japanese practices that embody the permaculture principles
Understanding how ecosystems function
Providing for the needs of humans in ways that are in harmony with nature
Fundamental steps in the permaculture design process
Urban application of permaculture design
Hands-on small scale food production (growing microgreens and apartment composting systems)
*About the suggested donation:
We do not charge a fee for our courses because we want them to be accessible to everybody – no matter what their financial situation. We do still have expenses though and put a great amount of time and energy to providing these courses. To allow us to keep providing workshops we ask that participants donate at a level they can comfortably afford. The amount we suggest for the donation reflects what we would likely charge were we to set a fee for the course. We gratefully accept donations larger than what we suggest and we also happily accept donations less than what we suggest. Most importantly, if you want to hear what we have to share then we want you to be on the course.

A workshop in which we look boldly at the state of modern society, the destruction of the environment and how we could live in a very different way - a way that is good for ourselves, our children, our human communities and the community of all life on Earth.
Many of us feel a sense of unease about the world today. We feel anxiety for the future, a future where we don’t see opportunities to live healthy fulfilled lives for ourselves and where we see each generation leaving to their children a world in poorer condition. We feel a great sadness for the injustice of our societies and for the way in which our way of life is destroying Earth. And we feel helpless to do anything about it.
In this workshop we look at the root causes of these issues and discuss practical solutions. We will look at:
ecology
technology
economics
community
education
food
health
energy
We will examine many aspects of the world today and ask how can we create the world that our hearts long for. What can we do as individuals and as communities.
Our hearts tell us that another world is possible. It is time to start living in that world.

Shikigami, located on the Izu peninsula, was established by Dion Workman and Asako Kitaori in February 2011. At Shikigami Workman and Kitaori are establishing a forest garden influenced by the philosophies of natural farming and deep ecology and the permaculture design system.
Simple in means, rich in ends, life at Shikigami focuses on the manifestation of abundance with minimal energy or external inputs. Traditional knowledge of wild foods, medicinal plants and forest crafts is researched and practiced. Appropriate traditional technologies are being revived and combined with new insights and understanding.
In this presentation Dion Workman will show photographs of Shikigami's first year and talk about the intentions, techniques, and experiences to date. The challenges and rewards of the couple's back-to-basics lifestyle will be discussed along with their vision for the future.

In this event lead by Dion Workman and Takuya Sasa, we look at the root causes of these issues and discuss practical solutions. We will discuss how to live sustainably. We will look at how our current economies, systems of education, attitudes towards technology and community are connected to prevent us from living in sustainable peaceful coexistence on Earth. We will discuss practical everyday ways to overcome the barriers to a better way of living.and ask how can we create the world that our hearts long for.
